Residential, Datacenter or Mobile Proxy: Which One for Each Use Case
Residential, datacenter or mobile — each proxy type solves a different problem at a different price range per GB. This table, collected on 12 August 2026, maps use case against proxy type and risk, so you choose based on your scenario, not just the most expensive option.
Residential, datacenter and mobile proxies solve three different problems at three very different prices per gigabyte. This is the matrix — use case against type against price range against risk — with every figure collected from the providers' own pricing pages on 12 August 2026. We do not sell proxies, so there is no thumb on the scale here.
The three types, one sentence each
- Datacenter. An IP that belongs to a hosting company. Fast, cheap, stable, and instantly recognisable as a server address by anyone who looks up who owns it.
- Residential.An IP assigned by a consumer internet provider to a home connection, rented to you for as long as the session lasts. Slower and far more expensive, but it looks like a person's house because it is one.
- Mobile.An IP from a mobile carrier's 4G/5G network, which by construction is shared by a large number of real subscribers at the same time.
There is a fourth door most articles skip, and it matters commercially: ISP proxies, also sold as static residential. These are addresses registered to a consumer internet provider but hosted in a datacenter. They read as residential to whoever checks the registry and behave like datacenter proxies in speed and uptime. They are the pragmatic middle, and they are priced per IP rather than per gigabyte.
What the platform actually sees, and it is not the label
"Residential" is a category invented by proxy vendors. No website receives a flag saying which one you bought. What a site can look up about the address you arrived from is roughly this:
- The ASN — the autonomous system number, which identifies the network the IP belongs to. Public registry data says whether that network is a hosting company, a consumer internet provider or a mobile carrier. This is the single strongest signal about the address, and it costs nothing to query.
- WHOIS and reverse DNS. Who registered the block and what name the address resolves back to. A reverse record ending in the name of a cloud provider is not subtle.
- IP reputation history. Commercial databases track how many distinct accounts, signups and abuse reports an address has been associated with. This is why a cheap shared IP can be poisoned before you ever touch it.
- Geolocation consistency. Whether the country the IP maps to agrees with the timezone, language and currency your browser is reporting.
ClientHello that reaches the destination is still your browser's, so your JA3/JA4 fingerprint crosses the proxy completely unchanged. Buying a more expensive proxy does not fix a TLS signature — that is a different layer with a different fix.One more thing worth settling before the price table, because it is a source of silent leaks: the protocol. An HTTP proxy handles HTTP and, through a CONNECTtunnel, HTTPS as well. SOCKS5 is a lower-level tunnel that carries whatever you put through it and can also resolve hostnames on the proxy side rather than on yours. That last detail decides where your DNS queries go: if names are resolved locally, your own provider's resolver sees every domain you visit while the traffic itself exits somewhere else — a mismatch that is invisible in the browser and obvious to anyone correlating the two. For account work, prefer a configuration where the proxy resolves the hostname, and verify it rather than assume it.
Which proxy should you use for each operation?
Match the type to the job, not to the budget. The pattern that decides it: does the destination care who you look like, or only whether the request went through?

When datacenter is the right call — and when it is the wrong one
Datacenter proxies get dismissed too quickly. For anything where the destination is not scoring an identity, they are the correct engineering answer: lower latency, no bandwidth meter running, and an address that stays yours. Monitoring, price collection from public pages, load testing your own infrastructure, keeping a build server on a fixed egress — all datacenter work.
They are the wrong call the moment a consumer platform is scoring the session. Not because they are "bad", but because the ASN says hosting company, and a personal account that connects every day from a rented server rack is a contradiction the platform can read from the first packet, before any fingerprinting even starts. Add that shared datacenter pools carry the history of everyone who used them before you, and the low price starts to make sense.
When residential is worth paying for
Residential is worth it when the address has to be part of a believable story: a person, at home, in a specific city, with a consumer provider's name behind the connection. That is exactly what an ad platform, a marketplace or a social network expects to see behind a normal account.
Two things to look at before you pick a residential vendor, neither of which is the price:
- How the addresses are sourced.Residential pools are built from real people's connections. Serious providers document consent-based sourcing and publish an ethics or compliance page. A vendor that is vague about where the IPs come from is telling you something about the quality of the pool as well as its ethics.
- Whether you get sticky sessions. A pool that changes your address every request is useless for logged-in work. You need to be able to hold the same exit IP for the duration of a session, and to get the same city back tomorrow.
If your work is one stable identity used daily rather than a rotating pool, ISP proxies usually beat rotating residential on both axes: you pay per IP instead of per gigabyte, and the address does not move. It is the closest thing to a home connection that stays put.
Mobile proxies: why the address weighs less
The technical reason mobile proxies behave differently has a name: carrier-grade NAT. Mobile networks do not have a public IPv4 address for every handset — they put large numbers of real subscribers behind a shared pool of public addresses. The consequence is direct: when a platform sees many distinct accounts arriving from one mobile IP, that is not evidence of anything, because it is what a normal Tuesday on a carrier network looks like. Platforms know this, so the address itself is weighted down as a signal.
That is the upside, and the cost table shows what it is priced at. The downside is the same coin: you share the address with strangers whose behaviour you do not control, and a carrier IP that has been abused by someone else will carry that reputation while you use it. Mobile is justified when a specific platform is hostile to both datacenter and residential ranges for your use case — not as a general upgrade.
Rotation and sticky sessions: the setting that breaks logged-in work
Most proxy accounts ship configured to rotate, because rotation is what scraping wants. Logged-in work wants the opposite. If your exit address changes in the middle of a session, many platforms treat it as a session anomaly, and the mildest outcome is being asked to log in again. The severe one is a verification challenge on an account that had been fine for months.
- Per-request rotation: correct for collecting public data, wrong for anything with a login.
- Sticky sessions: the same exit address for a defined window, usually selectable from a few minutes up to an hour or more. This is the setting for account work.
- Static (ISP or dedicated mobile port): the same address for as long as you pay for it. The right default for an identity used every day.
The practical rule is to decide the rotation policy per profile, not per account at the provider. A viewing profile that only opens a landing page in another country can happily take whatever address the pool hands it. A profile that holds a login you care about should get an address it keeps — and if you have to change it, change it once, deliberately, to a nearby city rather than another continent, and not in the middle of a session.
How to test whether your proxy is telling the truth
Vendors describe their own product. A ten-minute check tells you what the destination actually receives. Run it once per new proxy, before you put an account behind it.
- Exit address and ownership. Open the IP and proxy checker through the proxy and read the address, the country and the network it belongs to. A proxy sold as residential whose ASN belongs to a hosting company is not residential, whatever the invoice says.
- Geographic coherence. Compare the country of the exit address with the timezone and language your profile reports on the fingerprint checker. A German IP on a browser reporting America/Sao_Paulo and pt-BR is a contradiction you created yourself.
- WebRTC. A proxy does not stop WebRTC from exposing your real address, because that path does not go through the proxy at all. Run the WebRTC leak test with the proxy on and confirm nothing from your real connection appears.
- Stability. Reload the checker five times over ten minutes. If the address changes and you did not ask it to, your proxy is rotating and your logged-in sessions will pay for it.

- The site does not see the label you bought — it sees the ASN, the registry data and the reputation history of the address.
- Datacenter for work nobody is profiling; residential or ISP for logged-in accounts; mobile only when a platform is hostile to both.
- Per-GB and per-IP become comparable only after you convert both to cost per profile per month with your own measured traffic.
- Rotation is a scraping default that quietly breaks account work — use sticky or static addresses for anything with a login.
- A proxy fixes the network layer only. Canvas, fonts and the TLS handshake are other layers with other fixes.
Frequently asked questions
Is a residential proxy always better than datacenter?
No. It is better when the destination is scoring an identity — ad platforms, marketplaces, social networks. For reading public data, uptime monitoring or load-testing your own infrastructure, datacenter is technically better and costs a fraction of the price.
What is an ISP or static residential proxy?

Does changing proxy fix my fingerprint?

Canvas, WebGL, fonts and screen metrics are the browser layer, and JA3/JA4 is the TLS layer — the ClientHello that reaches the destination is still the one your browser built, even through an HTTP CONNECT tunnel or SOCKS5.
Why are mobile proxies so expensive?
Because the cost behind them is real: SIM cards, devices and carrier data plans. What you buy along with it is carrier-grade NAT — the operator puts many subscribers behind one public address, so that address is weaker evidence of correlation for the platform.
How many GB per month will I use?
Nobody can tell you without measuring, because it varies enormously with how image- and video-heavy your work is. Run one profile for one normal working hour, read the counter in your proxy dashboard and multiply: GB_month = active profiles x hours per day x GB per hour x days per month.
Is IP rotation good or bad?
It depends on the job. Per-request rotation is the right default for collecting public data and the wrong one for anything with a login: an address that changes mid-session usually drops the login and, at worst, triggers verification. For account work, use sticky sessions or static addresses.
